How to Write Blog Posts That Generate Solar Leads

Yes, blogging works for generating solar leads — if you do it right. Here's a step-by-step method to write blog posts that rank and convert.
CLIENT STORY
An installer I talked to wrote a single blog answering a common customer question: 'Grid-independent solar systems' years ago, and still gets hundreds of visits each month from that blog alone.
One well-written blog post can bring in hundreds of organic visits every month, without spending a cent on ads. Learn how to choose the right topics, write clearly, and drive action, while building trust with future customers.

1. Choose Topics Your Customers Actually Search For
Choosing the right topic is what will make or break your blog. Be ruthless: if your customers aren't searching for it, it won't help you with sales.
So, before you write anything:
- Think like your customer: what are they Googling?
- Use free tools like AnswerThePublic, Google Trends, and AlsoAsked.
- Prioritize local relevance—this drives actual installations.

Customer intent matters
Your best-performing blog posts will answer specific, real questions people ask when considering solar in your region.
Start with questions you often hear on the phone or during site visits:
- "How much does solar cost for my home?"
- "Do I need a battery for my solar system?"
- "Is solar worth it for my home in Austin?"
2. Write Clearly and Be Helpful
You don't need to be a professional writer. Just explain the answer in plain language, like you would if a customer asked you on the phone.
- Break content into sections with subheadings.
- Use short paragraphs and plain language.
- Include images or examples for clarity.
- Mention local data (like panel count, yield, costs).

Example: 'In North Rhine-Westphalia, a 5kW solar system needs ~12 panels and generates around 5,000 kWh annually.'
3. Add a Clear Call to Action
A blog post should gently guide the reader toward becoming a lead, without being pushy. Because let's be honest, if someone just reads your post and walks away, it probably won't help with your sales very much.
Use one gentle (but clear & actionable) call-to-action at the end:
- "Find out if solar makes sense for your home.": Great for awareness-stage readers evaluating solar.
- "Use our free calculator to estimate savings.": Interactive tools increase engagement and conversions.
- "Book a free consultation with our team.": Invite warm leads to take the next step.
Make it easy to act
Even a single CTA can double your chances of turning readers into solar leads.
Ideally, make your blog linked to a solar lead generation software or form, so you make the most out of every visitor.
But don't overdo it.
The purpose of a blog post is 90% to help & educate. The other 10% is your honest belief you can help your readers because your services are exactly what they need.
4. Use AI to Your Advantage
Blogs are great, but I know you feel your time is best spent installing and quoting solar. So, yes, you can use AI to speed things up.
But (and this is a BIG but), readers are smart, they can tell when something was written purely by AI. It's not necessarily a bad signal, but people will appreciate it much more if you use your words and spend a bit more time helping them, compared to just copy-pasting a whole article from an AI chatbot.
So, I highly recommend the following approach:
- Write a rough draft of your points and story.
- Use AI (like ChatGPT) to expand and clean up structure.
- Add back real examples, data, and personality.
- Avoid copy-pasting. Readers appreciate authenticity.
AI is your assistant, not your ghostwriter. Let it help, but make sure your human touch comes through.
5. Bonus Tips & Best Practices
I highly encourage you to just try writing one post and see how it goes. You took the team to read this blog, so you are already an expert ;)
But to really see blogs pay off, it usually takes more than just a single post:
- Be consistent. More posts give you more chances to win + Google loves it.
- Talk about your blog posts on social media.
- A/B test your CTA wording and placement. You will get it right eventually.
- Write like you're helping a real person (because you are!).
Trust compounds
The more valuable content you share, the more people trust you - and the more likely they are to contact you.
6. Just Do It
The hardest part of blogging is starting.
Don't overthink it. Open a doc, write something, and hit publish.
There's little to lose and a lot to gain. One blog post could bring you dozens of warm leads.
[And yes, this blog was written using the principles I'm teaching you. Go back and try to spot them :)]
